KANDA POHA is a famous breakfast snack specially in the state of Maharastra.Kanda means onions in Marathi and poha is rice flakes.


Thick Poha(flattened rice)-2 cups
Sliced Onions-1 large
Boiled Potato-1 medium(cut into small cubes)
Green Peas-1/8 cup
Mustard seeds-1 tsp
Asafetida-1/2 tsp
Peanuts-1/4 cup
Turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
Chopped Green chilies-2 or as per taste
Curry leaves-a handful
Lemon juice to taste or chopped tomato-1(small)
Grated coconuts-2 tbsp
Thin sev-1/2 tsp(optional)
Salt to taste
Sugar-2 tsp
Oil-1 tbsp


1-Wash poha with water on a strainer very well.Strain the excess water and keep aside.
2-In a pan heat oil,add curry leaves,asafetida,peanuts,mustard seeds and Cook till peanuts roasts a bit.
3-Add sliced onions,green peas,green chilies,salt and turmeric.Cook till onions and peas turn soft.
4-Next add the potato and mix to combine.Cover with the lid and cook until for 2-3 mins.
5-Mix poha in the cooked onion and potato.Cook covered for 1 minute.
6-Lastly add lemon juice and sugar.Mix well.Cook covered for another 2 minutes.
7-Garnish with grated coconuts and thin sev.Serve hot with tea.
(If you want add tomato instead of lemon juice,then add with potato and cook covered for 2-3 mins).
